Seminole State College President Dr. Georgia Lorenz congratulated students Feb. 11 during a speech at the President’s and Dean’s List Reception for students who achieved a 3.75 or higher grade point average for the fall semester.

Students received their certificates in the Automotive Training Center building and then went to the C Building for the formal reception.

To start off the speech, Dr. Jan Lloyd, associate vice president of Student Development, gave a short introduction and congratulations. She then welcomed Katie Bowman of Addition Financial, one of SSC’s partners, onto the stage.

Bowman congratulated the students, particularly the parents going back to school. She also announced the opening of an Addition Financial office on campus that will be staffed by students.

Lloyd then introduced the deans, stating their name and department. After this, she welcomed Lorenz to the stage.

Lorenz asked all the family members in the audience to stand, congratulating them for supporting their students’ academic careers. Throughout the speech, she announced accomplishments and awards achieved by specific students, including the Phi Theta Kappa All-Florida Academic Team Scholarship and Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Scholarship.

She finished off the speech by quoting John Dewey: “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”

Kevin Jordan, new dean of English, summed up what he liked about these receptions.

“I like celebrating students’ success.”
