Sociologists say: Examine Power of Social Media

Social media has helped in molding today’s society, if something gets enough attention on a social media platform it can be promoted to a wider audience regardless of its intentions.

According to Merriam-Webster, social media is forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content.

There are many positives of using Social Media as well as negatives. Regarding an article done by techmaish.com, some benefits of social media can be the connectivity that people can have to others around the world. It’s easy to log in and type what your feeling when then there’s nothing holding you back. Social Media itself can be very beneficial to people regardless of age because of its intuitive platforms.

Social Media can be perceived in different ways because everyone has his or her own mindset. Usually social media caters to the person using it, so everyone usually experiences something different from one another.

“Well honestly, Social Media can be made to how you view things about yourself and the world,” said Ebony K. Simpson, a student at Seminole State. “As you step outside of social media, you tend to get clues about yourself. Having it can also help to connect with others who feel the way you feel but it can also destroy you. Social media is similar to the world people live in on a daily basis but on an electronic device.”

Rebecca K. Padilla is a sociology teacher at SSC. She said social media has an impact on her courses.

“Media, in general, is one of the main social institutions forming and shaping many aspects of our lives,” Padilla said. “Sociologists view social media as a powerful social force that must indeed be critically examined.”

On the negative side, social media can cause anxiety, depression, cyber-cullying and unrealistic expectations, according to an article by makeuseof.com.

“You’re going to face a lot of criticism and mental issues, but on the plus side you’re getting your stuff out there,” said Jessica Vega, a student at SSC. She said she uses social media to promote her blog.

“Benefits would be that you can meet people socially,” Vega said. “You can like get more connections towards your business or future business.”
