[dropcap]S[/dropcap]kill sessions are workshops sponsored by Student Affairs offered at various times at all four Seminole state campuses. Seminole state counselors, professors, and advisors lead discussions on various topics, all are designed to help give you the kind of skills you need that you are not taught in your courses. Such as how to write a resume and cover letter, how to conduct research at the library, how to successfully manage your time, strategies for auto buying, and how to find peace in a stressful world. Everything is focused around you and your needs as a student to help you succeed now and beyond your academic career.
The workshops are absolutely free to all Seminole state students. There is no need to sign up, but do not forget to sign in when you arrive with your name and student ID number. This is the only way that your attendance is tracked. If you attend at least five skill sessions, you become eligible to win a $300 scholarship. The three students who attend the most sessions will all receive the scholarship. There are also a number of workshops available online to be accessed anytime for your convenience.
You may think that there are so many people doing it that it is not even worth it to even try. That is absolutely not the case. I attended two skill sessions recently and I was astonished to find that I was one of just two students both times! The counselor leading the first workshop that I attended, Dalia Fox, informed me that five people had signed up online (although that is not a requirement) and out of the two of us present, only one of us were among the five that RSVP’d.
It’s definitely worth the time to attend these workshops not only for the chance to win a scholarship but to learn useful skills to help you grow as a person. The only thing it really costs you is an hour of your time! Besides, the value is in the content that you learn, not in the possibility of winning.
